Italy dominates Aussie Millions

Written by Ben Blaschke

One of the biggest tournaments in the world, the Aussie Millions, is well underway in Melbourne and WGM will be here to provide weekly updates of all that’s going on in the lead-up to the Main Event which starts on 2 February.

It’s still early days but already we’ve seen two events decided and ironically it was two good friends from Italy who were celebrating last night after Mustapha Kanit took down the AU$1,100 Opening Event and Lorenzo Sabato won the AU$1,100 NLHE/PLO mix.

Kanit’s victory was particularly impressive. A huge field of 1,302 players took part in the Opening Event and after three long days, Kanit – who finished fourth in the US$25,000 High Roller event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure earlier in the month for almost US$500,000 – was the last man standing to take home AU$196,000.

Around the same time, his good friend Sabato was beating a quality field in the NLHE/PLO event. Sabato outlasted a field of 206 players, including four WSOP bracelet winners, to claim the AU$34,200 first prize.

With the Europeans off to a great start, we’ll be looking for Asia and Asia Pacific to bounce back with some victories of their own in the coming days. Among the notable events to keep an eye on are the AU$1,100 6-max, the AU$1,100 PLO and the AU$1,100 Accumulator.
