Fresh from its impressive revenue results, MGM – in partnership with Wushu General Association of Macau – is preparing to co-host the sixth annual “MGM Lion Dance Championship – Macau International Invitational.”

To be held on 12 and 13 November at MGM Macau’s Grande Praça, this year’s “Male Lion Dance Championship” features 15 teams from 10 countries and regions: China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The troupes include the 2015 second runner-up, Malaysia’s Persatuan Tarian Singa Dan Naga Kun Seng Keng, and two renowned local lion dance troupes – Associação Desportiva e Recreativa Hong Wai de Macau and Associação Desportiva e do Leão Acordado Lo Leong.

The two-day Championship will also be running Macau’s first “Female Traditional Lion Dance Championship” with an international standard rating system, which is upgraded from the pioneering “Female Lion Dance Performance Competition” that has taken place since 2011. This year’s Championship features eight female lion dance troupes from China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.

The Southern Lion Dance is a sport-oriented activity, being performed by a team of two dancers and requiring a different set of skills and strength so as to perform the moves and achieve various postures that serve to imitate and simulate the different moods and physical movements of a dancing lion that is made to look life-like.
