More big changes coming to Macau!

Written by Yuci Tai

Macau Legend Development Limited recently announced the latest in the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf (MFW) redevelopment with the new facilities to include the Harbor View Hotel – which is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2014 – the Legend Palace Hotel, the Legendale Hotel with a minimum of 100 next generation Pachinko machines and other electronic games, a Dinosaur Museum, a yacht club at the Marina and other attractions.

At the same time, SJM and Versace have announced the signing of an agreement to open a hotel bearing the trademark “Palazzo Versace” as part of SJM’s integrated casino resort in Cotai, Macau. Palazzo Versace Macau will be the first luxury 5-star hotel in Macau to be designed by one of the world’s leading fashion houses, and the first Palazzo Versace in Asia.

I’m pleased to see the MFW redevelopment because it wasn’t operated successfully in the past. The roller coaster and sightseeing boat which made up the landmark Two Holes Volcano were both closed shortly after the MFW grand opening due to accidents while the Tang Dynasty and Roman Amphitheatre existed in name only. The shopping area wasn’t lively either.

The two hole volcano didn't set the world on fire!

To be hones MFW in its current form has never worked. But I think MFW has superb potential to become one of the area’s hottest sightseeing points as well as an excellent night time entertainment precinct, given its great location on Macau Island and its large expanse. With so many interesting buildings, it’s a shame it has been left in the cold but I’m looking forward to seeing the new look MFW.

As for SJM’s resort project in Cotai, the entire project is expected to be completed in 2017 with a budget of MOP$25 billion. You can imagine what a huge and amazing project this is. In fact, with the increasingly fierce competition among gaming enterprises, this will certainly make entertainment more diversified. The new Macau is only a 9-year-old and continues to grow every day. No matter how many times you have been, there is always a reason to visit again and again!
