Premier League season the most unpredictable ever

Written by Leanne Lu

The Premier League has revealed another title contender this season with Tottenham Hotspur suddenly emerging as an unexpected challenger. Five consecutive wins, aided by Manchester City’s back-to-back defeats and Leicester City’s loss to Arsenal last weekend, has moved the Lily White to second place in the League, trailing Leicester by just two points. With only goal difference separating them and Arsenal, it may also the first campaign in Premier League history in which the two derby clubs fight it out for the trophy.

White Hart Lane – a place that has always been in shadow of its north London counterpart Emirates Stadium – is soon to be rebuilt in order to increase revenue and therefore the club’s international reputation. Although they have threatened to join the “big five” in recent seasons, Tottenham has typically struggled to break into Europe, reaching the Champions League only once in their Premier League history. The top performer in that Champions League campaign, Gareth Bale, was quickly lured to Spanish giants Real Madrid the following season with Spurs unable to retain their Champions League spot.

Daniel Levy, the savvy Spur chairman who is renowned for his shrewd tactics in the transfer market, failed to transform the club into a Premier League title contender even with Bale’s massive transfer fee at his disposal. But Mauricio Pochettino, a follower of famous Argentinian manager Marcelo Bielsa, has changed the club’s fortune. Under his guidance, young players like Harry Kane, Dele Ali and Eric Dier have become indispensable players at the club, infusing a dynamic energy into the squad and making the Lane as entertaining a place as ever to watch football.

A win against Manchester City away from home last weekend proved their title credentials. Fairly speaking, it was a good time to face City with their squad clearly lacking motivation following news of manager Manuel Pellegrini’s departure at the end of the season. Since the club officially announced the imminent arrival of Pep Guardiola in the summer, City has succumbed to two title competitors in consecutive weeks.

But it means the closing stages of this EPL season promise to be more entertaining than ever. It has already been a crazy time with minnows Leicester City climbing to the top – now with Tottenham in the chasing pack, anything could happen come May!
