Resorts World Manila smashes poker record

Written by Ben Blaschke

Resorts World Manila (RWM) is set to join the Guinness Book of Records after smashing the world record for the longest continuous poker tournament earlier this week.

A total of 115 players took their seats in the Iron Man Challenge at 20:00 on Friday 13 December and by the time a winner was crowned two days later they had been going at it for a remarkable 48 hours, 55 minutes and 58.5 seconds. The new mark easily surpassed the previous record of 36 hours, 34 minutes and 41 seconds set in the United States earlier in the year.

American Damon Shulenberger emerged victorious, fighting off the effects of fatigue just long enough to outlast Korea’s Choi Byung Kyoo and claim the US$18,240 first prize. It was a particularly impressive feat from Shulenberger, who had never pulled an all-nighter at the poker tables before yet was never out of his seat for more than five a minutes at a time in Manila.

It was also another successful tournament for the up and coming Asian Poker Tour (APT), who ran the Iron Man Challenge in conjunction with RWM. It’s been a huge month for the APT, with this event coming right off the back of the inaugural APT Sydney which attracted a huge field of 648 players.
