Sydney benefits from Macau downturn during Chinese New Year

Written by Ben Blaschke

Sydney casino The Star has been reaping the rewards of Macau’s gaming downturn with everything from its junket and direct gaming rooms, hotel rooms and even some restaurants completely booked out over the Chinese New Year period.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, The Star has more than 4,000 hotel room nights booked out over the current fortnight as Sydney’s attraction as both a gaming and tourist attraction for Chinese visitors continues to climb.

“We’re full up across the next couple of weeks,” The Star General Manager Mr Greg Hawkins, told the SMH. “From a business point of view, within the tourism economy that China market is very critical to us and there’s now a far greater understanding here in Australia of … that Chinese guest experience.”

“We’ve got a wide range of gaming rooms for both direct and junket customers and they are all booked out over the next couple of weeks because of the high demand we are seeing at the top of that gaming space.”
