Sydney latest stop on Asian poker schedule

Written by Ben Blaschke

With the Macau Millions, which wrapped up over the weekend having attracted a record Asian field of 1,804 players, now out of the way, attention in the Asia-Pacific region this week turns to the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour and one of the most popular stops on the tour in Sydney.

Now in its sixth year, the inaugural ANZPT Sydney event in April 2009 was just the second ever ANZPT event and attracted a field of 493 players – a Tour record until ANZPT Melbourne introduced a Repecharge format in 2013. With the opening flight set to kick off at The Star casino tonight, it will be interesting to see whether they can crack 500 for the first time after 461 took part in 2012 and 460 last year.

The signs have certainly been good in Australia’s biggest city of late with a massive 648 players registering for last December’s APT event – the biggest ever field in a major in Sydney.

This week’s event is the last of the three ANZPT events to have been officially scheduled so far in 2014 although we will no doubt see a few more stops announced shortly. Players will be looking to join David Lim (Auckland) and Patrick Mahoney (Perth) on the list of ANZPT Season 6 winners.

Following ANZPT Sydney, the next event on the Asia-Pacific tournament schedule is APPT Seoul from 1 to 6 April followed by the next installment of the ACOP Platinum Series in Macau from 17 to 20 April.
