Taxis encouraged to impress

Written by Ben Blaschke

Macau’s taxi drivers have an opportunity to show just how much their service has improved over the past 12 months with City of Dreams and Show Media – a leading provider of interactive digital taxi media platforms – launching a Taxi Driver Appreciation program.

Designed to further encourage a positive taxi experience for visitors to Macau, the program will see prizes awarded to those taxi drivers who deliver the best experience to customers.

Passengers can indicate whether they have had a positive experience by pushing a special “Click if you loved your taxi ride” button on the taxi’s Show Media unit during the ride.

Taxis have been a significant problem in Macau in recent times due to a lack of available taxis and their habit of “fishing” – stopping a certain distance from cab ranks and offering to take passengers only if they pay hugely inflated prices.

However, thanks to the efforts of the Macau Taxi Passenger Association, which helped bring the issue into the public arena, the taxi industry as a whole has seen significant improvement.

“The Macau taxi fishing prevalence percentage has gone from around 85 percent to around 10 percent,” said Andrew W Scott, President of the Macau Taxi Passenger Association.

“Whilst any percentage above 0 is unhealthy, we can live with 10 percent … it’s in line with other cities around the world.”
