Title race over?

Written by Ben Blaschke

The title race looks all but over already as Chelsea celebrated a double victory at the weekend. The Blues claimed their first trophy since manager Jose Mourinho’s return last year with a dominant 2-0 win over London rivals Tottenham in the League Cup final but an even more telling result was taking place at Anfield where their only title rivals Manchester City fell 2-1 to Liverpool.

It’s now 12 league game since City last won at Anfield which remains the only Premier League ground at which they are yet to taste victory since becoming one of the competition’s big guns. This one hurt more than most though, allowing Chelsea to retain their five point gap at the top and now with a game to spare as well. With 12 games to go in their season it’s hard to see Mourinho’s men dropping enough points to let City back in.

Liverpool’s win also set up a thrilling race to secure the remaining two champions league places with just seven points separating Arsenal in third and Tottenham in seventh – Spurs also having a game in hand over the four sides directly above them.

The Reds are the only side still undefeated in the League in 2015 and after their shocking start to the season are now just three points behind Arsenal and two behind bitter rivals Manchester United.

With momentum on their side, the Gunners and Red Devils will certainly be looking over their shoulders with some tough games coming up for both.
