Travel to outer space

Written by Yuci Tai

Just like in many countries, tourist attractions in Macau have traditionally been there for the enjoyment of travelers – locals rarely go to visit. But it doesn’t have to be that way and the Macao Science Center, which serves as a landmark to complement tourism development in Macau while promoting science popularization and education, is a great place to visit for local families. It holds lots of different events and exhibitions that are well worth seeing and I believe The International Planetarium Society – Macao International Fulldome Festival 2014 (IPS-MIFF 2014) taking place right now is a great attraction for everyone to visit.

To promote communication and cooperation among the international planetarians and dome show producers, this annual event for professional planetarians, which is jointly organized by the International Planetarium Society – including the Macao Science Center Ltd & Beijing Planetarium – is now officially open. It is the first fulldome festival held in Macao at the Guiness World Record winning Planetarium with the highest resolution 8k 3D fulldome theatre in the world.

The centerpiece of the Planetarium is a tilted semi-dome screen nearly 15 meters in diameter, with the world’s first digital dome theatre system that can project stereoscopic images with a resolution up to 8000 x 8000 pixels. The system consists of 12 ultra-high resolution digital projectors and 48 powerful graphic computers in synchronization producing super high definition 3D images. When the audience wear their special glasses, they can see 3D images projected onto the screen and be taken on a journey traveling freely into space.

The Planetarium of the Macao Science Center is going to hold a public screening for the IPS shortlisted and winning dome shows from 21 June to 31 July. I recommend you watch “Dream To Fly” which won The Best Visuals and The Best Audience Choice. I also recommend and The Best 3D and The Best 8K “To Space & Back 3D”. Tickets are available at the Macao Science Center and MacauTicket.com. For details of the IPS events, please visit the website of IPS-MIFF 2014 at http://www.msc.org.mo/fulldomefestival/index.php.
