Weekend wrap

Written by Big Jim

Liverpool is on fire and it was fierce rivals Manchester United on the barbeque over the weekend. This is the first time the Reds have won their opening three games of the season in almost 20 years with Daniel Sturridge making it three goals in as many games for a 1-0 win at Anfield. A competitive Liverpool and a struggling Manchester United really sets up a fascinating picture in the EPL this year. My boys Stoke City recorded their second victory of the year with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace to move into the top five but things get a little tougher for them over the next few games.

Lleyton Hewitt has wound back the clock to progress to the final 16 at the US Open. He will face either Tommy Haas or Mikhail Youzhny in what will be the battle of the retirement village, but it will be great to see one of these veterans make it through to the quarter finals.

What a farce the world of cricket is at times. Australia and England were tied at one all after two 20/20 games, which set up a great decider – except for the fact that there wasn’t one! The Aussies now play Scotland and the Poms in six 50-over games. It’s this kind of sheer stupidity that leaves fans shaking their heads.

Big Jim punters would have been happy to see Jorge Lorenzo win the British Moto GP. It came right down to the wire but our bet was always pretty safe given we had him to claim a podium finish. This result tightens up the race for the championship with Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and championship leader Marc Marquez all within 39 points of one another.
