Weekend wrap

Oh how sweet it is. Finally the Geelong Cats have been punished for their flashy antics and refusal to finish games off. They had the Hawks on the ropes twice in their AFL preliminary final on Friday but failed to get the job done. The “Kennett Curse” is now over and the Hawks will face the impressive Fremantle Dockers in the Grand Final who were simply awesome against an injured Sydney team. Check out my Grand Final preview to find out who will win and why.

Is the Liverpool we have come to know over the last decade slipping back into bad habits again? You can’t win titles if you lose at home to the likes of Southampton and the Reds will be regretting the 1-0 defeat that has cost them top spot. Still, their pain is nothing like that of Manchester United who fell to a disastrous 4-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Manchester City. It leaves them on only seven points – five behind Arsenal at the top.

UFC 164 showcased Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones taking on Swedish challenger Alexander Gustafsson. Jones started the fight as a $1.10 favourite (1/10) but after the third round it appeared he needed to win the last two to claim the title. It was an amazing fight and no one could argue with the judges who agreed it was a narrow victory for the champ. It was nice to see a fair result after the scoring debacle of the Floyd Mayweather fight the weekend before. The UFC continues to make ground on boxing, which continues to run from scandal to scandal.

The Manly Sea Eagles limped over the line against Cronulla and the Newcastle Knights showed amazing passion to beat the Melbourne Storm in the NRL. I have a feeling, though, that the big winners of the weekend were the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters who sat on the couch waiting for their semi-final opponents to make it through two bruising encounters.
