WGM’s Best Bets: Monday 1 June

Written by Ben Blaschke

The fourth round of a grand slam is considered by many to be the “real” start of the tournament as the big guns start coming face to face and tonight sees a huge clash at the French Open with last year’s runner-up David Ferrer against defending US Open champion Marin Cilic.

The sportsbooks have Ferrer pegged as a strong $1.40 favorite here but we think they’ve got it all wrong with the Spaniard’s excellent record in Paris perhaps clouding the reality of this particular clash. Ferrer scraped through his third round clash with Simon Bolelli in five sets but it’s not any concerns over fatigue that have us leaning the other way here but the irrepressible form of Cilic.

The big-hitting Croatian is looking just as ruthless as he was in New York last year on his way to the US Open title, having won all three matches so far in straight sets – losing just 25 games in the process – and we can see him simply overpowering Ferrer tonight.
