WGM’s Best Weekend Bets: 6 February to 8 February

Written by Ben Blaschke

It’s all about football this weekend with some huge games to be played right across Europe including a couple of massive derbies in the EPL as Tottenham host Arsenal and Liverpool travel across town to Everton.

Picking a winner in these games can never be done with confidence because the extra motivation the derbies provide can instigate the unexpected, however there are plenty of reasons to expect a high scoring game in the north London derby. Although Arsenal have won the past two Premier League meetings between these two 1-0, on both occasions Tottenham came into the game in poor shape.

This time the two sides are red hot and playing some exceptional attacking football. They also have a history of high-scoring fixtures, from consecutive 5-2 wins to the Gunners in 2012 to the classic 3-3 game in 2011 and 4-4 result in 2008. In fact, putting aside those two recent 1-0 games, the previous eight EPL meetings saw a minimum of three goals scored in each and a total of 37 at an average of 4.6 per game!

It’s derby time in Spain too as Madrid rivals Atletico and Real face off again. Defending La Liga champions Atletico won this fixture earlier in the season and now enjoy home ground advantage, but so impressive has Real been since – losing just one game – that it’s hard to tip against them. Although they have lost James Rodriquez to a broken foot, the big news is Cristiano Ronaldo’s return from suspension.
