WGM’s Best Weekend Bets: Fri 5 to Sun 7 Jun

Written by Ben Blaschke

We’ll kick off the weekend’s action in Paris where the French Open has reached the semi-final stage. Tonight sees a fascinating clash between home favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Swiss ace Stansilas Wawrinka. Tsonga caused an upset in the quarters to defeat out man Kei Nishikori, but getting over the top of Wawrinka is another matter altogether.

Wawrinka hasn’t played this well since he won the Australian Open in 2014 having dropped just one set all tournament and disposing of Gilles Simon and Roger Federer in straight sets in his past two matches. By comparison, Tsonga went to five sets against Nishikori and four against Tomas Berdych before that. We like the look of the Swiss.

Saturday sees the long-awaited Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus and although the Italian side have demonstrated superb defense on their way to this point, holding out the brilliance of Barca’s front three is no simple task. We anticipate an epic encounter here but in the end the class of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar should be too much for Juventus to stop.

Finally it’s the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Montreal. This looks like another epic clash between the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Hamilton took pole here last year and will be looking to win three races in a row for the first time in his career, while Hamilton is the only current driver to have won here more than once and will be keen to make amends after his team’s error cost him certain victory in Monaco last start. Hamilton has generally shown more speed than Rosberg since they’ve been teammates, with some exceptions, and he appears to be the more reliable bet. Hamilton to win.
