An intriguing opening round clash in the AFL sees North Melbourne hosting Essendon in a game that could set the tone for the year ahead. The Kangaroos were the unluckiest side in the competition last year – losing 10 games by less than three goals – but they appear to be a side on the improve and provided they learn to win those tight games they should be expecting a strong top eight finish.
It’s harder to know what to expect from Essendon. After a great start in 2013, the ongoing drugs saga that enveloped the club eventually proved too much to bear. They head into this year with coach James Hird suspended and it wouldn’t surprise to see them take a while to warm to the task.
