WGM’s Weekend Bets: 30 January to 1 February

Written by Ben Blaschke

It’s a huge weekend of sport across the globe with football fans in for a real treat as the EPL returns and the Asian Cup draws to a close with the final between Australia and South Korea to be played in Sydney.

Let’s start with the Asian Cup finale where the host nation will be looking to gain revenge for their 1-0 group loss to the Koreans a touch under two weeks ago. Despite that result, there is a lot to like about the Australians in this one. They have been the most convincing side of the knockout stages with consecutive 2-0 wins over China and the UAE, and of course let’s not forget that they although they lost to the Koreans they dominated the majority of that game. Socceroos to win.

It’s a top of the table clash in the EPL as Chelsea plays host to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. We’re going to stick with the hosts again here. The Blues have started to rediscover their mojo of late while City is in the midst of a worrying form slump that has seen them win just one of their last four Premier League games – including a 2-0 home loss to Arsenal last start.

It’s Super Bowl time! The big day has finally arrived as defending champions Seattle face New England in Arizona. The build-up to this clash has been mired in controversy with the Patriots accused of deflating a number of the balls used in their AFC Championship game against the Colts. The wave of public sentiment is, as a result, largely against New England but that’s not why we’re on the Seahawks. Rather, their form is simply irresistible with eight wins in a row and 11 from their last 12 heading into this game. They also boast a wonderfully well-organized defence that will be very difficult for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to break down.
