WGM’s weekend preview

Written by Ben Blaschke

The World Cup is heating up in Brazil with teams starting to play their second group games and some now just 90 minutes away from knowing whether they will progress to the next round or catch an early flight home.

The coming days sees some particularly important clashes, with defending champions Spain in serious danger of being eliminated if they don’t beat Chile, England and Uruguay also fighting for survival against one another and Portugal needing a win over the United States to keep their campaign alive.

Wimbledon starts on Monday and while the big guns of the men’s game are having the week off, final preparations are underway for the world’s top women – particularly at Eastbourne where there have been some notable upsets already this week. Victoria Azarenka was a shock first round loser at the hands of Italy’s Camila Giorgi, Sara Errani fell to qualifier Lauren Davis and Jelena Jankovic fell in straight sets to Madison Keys. It will be interesting to see who will shine instead on the London grass over the coming days.

The Formula 1 season heads to Austria for the first time in 11 years and there is renewed interest in what might unfold after Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo snapped Mercedes’ winning streak two weeks ago in Canada. Ricciardo’s first ever F1 win was the first race of 2014 that wasn’t won by either Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton, while Hamilton’s retirement means he now trails Rosberg by 22 points in the Drivers’ Championship.

And with the US Open now done and dusted, the eyes of the golfing world move to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. It’s another top class field with the likes of Jason Day, Keegan Bradley, Greg Chalmers and Matt Kuchar all in the field, but our money is on world number three Bubba Watson who boasts a tremendous record here. Champion in 2010, he also finished fourth last year and in a tie for second the year before so look for another top 5 finish this week.

Good luck and good punting.
