Welcome to another “What’s on this week”, our weekly wrap of fun and enlightening things for you to see and do around Macau over the next seven days. The big news this week is the start of the 24th Macao Arts Festival — a month long celebration encompassing theatrical works, Chinese traditional opera, music, visual arts exhibitions and dance performances. Our younger readers might be interested in seeing some of Asia’s hottest young musical talents at the Top Teen Music Concert while sports fans are in for a real treat as China’s former NBA star Yao Ming and NBA legend Gary Payton face off in the 2013 Venetian Macao All-Star Challenge.

The Venetian Carnevale

The Venetian Carnevale is coming back on a scale that you’ve never seen before! From 25 April to 26 May 2013 you can get a taste of authentic Italian culture through the huge range of festivities, including Bandaloop performances, 3D laser-mapped light and sound projection, street entertainment, art exhibitions and more!

The Sound of Joyfulness — Teachers and Students Vocal Concert

For something a little different, why not head down to the Macao Cultural Center where teachers and students from the Macau Polytechnic Institute will wow you with two hours of music from all across Europe as well as some traditional Chinese folk songs!

2013 Venetian Macao All Star Challenge

See one of China’s greatest ever athletes, retired NBA star Yao Ming, coach his Shanghai Sharks against a celebrity team headed by nine-time NBA All-Star Gary Payton, former NBA players Horace Grant and Rafer Alston as well as celebrity players Alex Fong and Kelvin Kwan. The night includes a half-time dunking show, lucky draw prizes and the chance to take the court as a player in the game!

24th Macao Arts Festival — Drought and Rain

This contemporary dance work by renowned French director, choreographer and performance artist Ea Sola lifts the curtain on this year’s Macao Arts Festival. Sola’s ballet takes a deep look at the memories of war and is remarkable in none of the performers are professionally-trained dancers — all are singers who once performed to comfort soldiers in the Vietnam War. Did we mention that the entire cast is aged over 55? This is one not to be missed!

24th Macao Arts Festival — Home Sweet Home

Is comedy more your thing? Make sure you catch hilarious Portuguese duo Maria Rueff and Joaquim Monchique in Home Sweet Home as they look at the highs and lows of life at the Golden Anthurium Home for Quality Seniors.

Top Teen Music Concert

Asia’s hottest young musical talents come together for a night of mesmerizing vocals and eye-catching choreography at The Venetian Macau. China’s Guo Yi and Song Jing Yu, Taiwan’s A-Lin, Danson Tang, Xiaoyu Sung, Hey Girl, Hins Cheung from Hong Kong and Singaporean twin-girl band BY2 are among those set to perform.

Napoleon and the Decorative Arts: Treasures of the Imperial Palaces
