Welcome to “What’s on this week”, where we let you know about all of the activities, shows, events and festivals being held in Macau this week. The first display of the 25th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest is coming this weekend while global superstar Rihanna – the “No. 1 Person On Facebook” with over 63 million fans – is bringing her Diamonds World Tour to Macau.

25th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest
The annual Macau International Fireworks Display Contest – universally acclaimed as one of the best of its kind – takes place on the Macau Tower shore front, this year featuring battles between Spain v South Africa (14/9), Switzerland v Korea (19/9), Portugal v Australia (21/9), Italy v Canada (28/9) and France v China (1/10) in this whizz bang spectacular. A thrilling highlight will be the laser light effects which are a new addition to this year’s contest. The Fireworks Carnival next to Macau Tower also promises to be a real blast! It includes Food, performances and games.

Cultural Activities in Coloane Square
A good place to enjoy Saturday afternoon is Eduardo Marques Square in old Coloane Village. There are street performances of unplugged songs and acrobatics by the “Flash Art Group” – all in the mesmerizing time warp of Macau’s very own Brigadoon.

Evening Concert – Sing with Joy
A cappella (Italian for ‘in the manner of the church’) – best described as solo or group singing without instrumental sound — is a uniquely melodious musical genre which comes to Macau this Saturday in the form of the renowned Gay Singers of Hong Kong and Associação de A Cappella de Macau. “National Grand Theatre Orchestra 2013” Asian Tour
Resident conductor of both the National Grand Theatre Orchestra and Macau Orchestra, Lü Jia picks up the baton for NGTO’s much-anticipated tour this year, the first stop of which will be Macau. Concert highlights will include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major (Op. 55), American composer Michael Gordon’s “Beijing Harmony”, and Chinese violinist Ning Feng’s “Butterfly Lovers” concerto.

Films Screening at World Heritage-listed Ho Tung Library
Local film critic Anson Wu has selected six documentaries from the Macau Central Library’s collection for viewing and audience discussion this weekend in the World Heritage-listed Ho Tung Library. Herb & Dorothy will be screened on 14 September and and Dancing Dreams – Teenagers Perform on 15 September.

The Colorful New York Art Journey
This exhibition, which presents the iconic New York that captivates the world’s imagination, features 29 selected works ranging from line drawing, painting, watercolor on wood, ink and color on paper to digital printing, all housed in the L2 gallery arcade. Through the works of nine Macau artists, one can witness the grandeur and marvels of New York through the artists’ own experience and interpretation of the city.

Magic of Creation – Costume Exhibition
Macau Fashion Gallery – an exciting focal point for exhibiting fashion designs and serving as an interactive window for fashion art education – is now showing Magic of Creation Costume Exhibition for Original Musical “Myth of Fox” to showcase the successful cultural co-operation between local fashion designers and stage performance artists. Some 16 stage costumes will be shown, featuring the works of director Kenneth Leung and Macau designers Sandy Ho, Carlos Wong, San Lee and Akina Lei.

XXIX Collective Exhibition of Macau Artists
Now in its 29th year, the Collective Exhibition of Macau Artists has been collecting masterpieces of Chinese painting, Western painting and Chinese calligraphy works to and share with the public. From the 265 participating works this year, 54 were selected by the members of the jury for display at the exhibition, which includes 18 Chinese paintings, 19 Western paintings and 17 Chinese calligraphy works.

Beauties of Myanmar – Burmese Contemporary Art Exhibition
Three Burmese artists – Saw Kyaw Zaw, Aung Thi Ha and Khine Minn Soe – majored art in Yangon Myanmar and have established a solid position in the industry. In this exhibition they have created the theme of women, showing women in a poetic and elegant posture from Myanmar ethnic life with the perfect matching of color. Denis Murrell @ Signum 2013
A strong supporter of local artistic talent, 285 Signum Living Store is currently hosting an exhibition of 14 works by the award-winning Australian painter Denis Murrell, whose paintings are to be found in many private and public collections in Macau and overseas. His works typically evoke a sense of riotous joy via the artist’s hallmark technique of acrylic on tissue paper over canvas, resulting in a very particular textural appearance that has intrigued exhibition-goers for decades.
