Welcome to “What’s on this week”, where we let you know about all of the activities, shows, events and festivals being held in Macau this week. The Acrobatic Ballet Swan Lake
In celebration of the 64th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Acrobatic Troupe of Guangdong presents an award-winning performance of the classic ballet Swan Lake which has taken China, Russia, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and the UK by storm. This ‘must see’ performance is the perfect way to celebrate National Day.

“Taste the Tasty Culture” Programme
This Lecture, held from 15:00 to 17:00 on 28 September, looks at the growing habitats of different tea plants in the Southwest tea district – in-particular at green tea, black tea, yellow tea and dark tea. Meanwhile, you also can join the Nostalgic Tour of Macau Tea Culture from10:00 to 13:00 on 29 September. The route takes in the Macau Tea Culture House, Lung Wa Teahouse, Luk Kwok Restaurant, Lan Heong Kok Restaurant, Koon Nam Teahouse, Tai Long Fong Teahouse and Ieng Kei Teashop.

World Tourism Day Tray Race
World Tourism Day represents a great opportunity to enjoy the city’s many attractions plus the opportunity to receive a free souvenir distributed by the Macau Government Tourist Office when visitors enter Macau on 27 September. Meanwhile, fun seekers can get their thrills and spills at the annual Tray Race, which pitches waiters and waitresses from various local hotels and restaurants against each other in a frenzied footrace balancing a bottle of beer on a tray!

Bela Vista Poetry Sessions – With Words I Love
In a unique strengthening of ties between China and the West, the Bela Vista – renowned for many years as a former hotel of classical appearance and now a Consulate – will host an evening of poetry recital by local poets as well as those who have lived in the territory or written about Macau. In this way, the project hopes to highlight the important role played by Macau as a cultural hub linking East and West. The languages employed will be Chinese, Portuguese and English.

Singer Returned Live Tour Macao 2013

25th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest
The annual Macau International Fireworks Display Contest – universally acclaimed as one of the best of its kind – takes place on the Macau Tower shore front, this year featuring battles between Spain v South Africa (14/9), Switzerland v Korea (19/9), Portugal v Australia (21/9), Italy v Canada (28/9) and France v China (1/10) in this whizz bang spectacular. A thrilling highlight will be the laser light effects which are a new addition to this year’s contest. The Fireworks Carnival next to Macau Tower also promises to be a real blast! It includes Food, performances and games.

The Colorful New York Art Journey
This exhibition, which presents the iconic New York that captivates the world’s imagination, features 29 selected works ranging from line drawing, painting, watercolor on wood, ink and color on paper to digital printing, all housed in the L2 gallery arcade. Through the works of nine Macau artists, one can witness the grandeur and marvels of New York through the artists’ own experience and interpretation of the city.

Magic of Creation – Costume Exhibition
Macau Fashion Gallery – an exciting focal point for exhibiting fashion designs and serving as an interactive window for fashion art education – is now showing Magic of Creation Costume Exhibition for Original Musical “Myth of Fox” to showcase the successful cultural co-operation between local fashion designers and stage performance artists. Some 16 stage costumes will be shown, featuring the works of director Kenneth Leung and Macau designers Sandy Ho, Carlos Wong, San Lee and Akina Lei.

XXIX Collective Exhibition of Macau Artists
Now in its 29th year, the Collective Exhibition of Macau Artists has been collecting masterpieces of Chinese painting, Western painting and Chinese calligraphy works to and share with the public. From the 265 participating works this year, 54 were selected by the members of the jury for display at the exhibition, which includes 18 Chinese paintings, 19 Western paintings and 17 Chinese calligraphy works.

Beauties of Myanmar – Burmese Contemporary Art Exhibition
Three Burmese artists – Saw Kyaw Zaw, Aung Thi Ha and Khine Minn Soe – majored art in Yangon Myanmar and have established a solid position in the industry. In this exhibition they have created the theme of women, showing women in a poetic and elegant posture from Myanmar ethnic life with the perfect matching of color. It also shows different styles of painting and composition effects.

Denis Murrell @ Signum 2013
A strong supporter of local artistic talent, 285 Signum Living Store is currently hosting an exhibition of 14 works by the award-winning Australian painter Denis Murrell, whose paintings are to be found in many private and public collections in Macau and overseas. His works typically evoke a sense of riotous joy via the artist’s hallmark technique of acrylic on tissue paper over canvas, resulting in a very particular textural appearance that has intrigued exhibition-goers for decades.
