Where the streets have new names

Written by Ben Blaschke

Perhaps Macau will honor its gaming visionaries in a similar way in the future?

The Las Vegas Review-Journal last week revealed a tentative plan to rename a small street currently known as Baltimore Avenue – which runs alongside iconic Las Vegas landmark the Stratosphere – after local legend Bob Stupak.

Stupak, who died in 2009, was not only one of Vegas’ great characters but also one of its most important entrepreneurs with his many contributions to the gaming industry culminating in the Stratosphere itself – at 1,149 feet high one of the 10 tallest buildings in the world at time of completion.

The Stratosphere was Stupak’s ultimate dream and although it just about sent him broke, it has gone on to become one of the most recognizable structures in the Vegas skyline. Stupak’s son Nevada recently proposed renaming Baltimore Avenue in his father’s honor and the plan has already gained support from some City Councilmen as well as the Stratosphere’s current owners.

We think it’s a no-brainer and wouldn’t be surprised to see the likes of Stanley Ho and his family honored in a similar way in the future. Food for thought!
