WPT heads to the Philippines

Written by Ben Blaschke

A hectic month for poker across the Asia-Pacific region sees a landmark event take place this week with the first ever WPT National Philippines event taking place at Solaire Resort and Casino in Manila.

It’s now two years since the World Poker Tour first signaled their intent to push into Asia with WPT National Sanya, which returns for a third time from 28 October, but this new Philippines leg looms as a particularly interesting one given Manila has already been a regular stop on both the Asia Pacific Poker Tour and Asian Poker Tour.

We’re also hearing that it is just the start of much more to come with more legs likely to be added in and around Asia in the coming years.

The inaugural WPT National Philippines gives players an opportunity to experience a WPT-run tournament without the hefty price tags that come with their traditional main tour stops. A total of 12 events make up the schedule with the US$2,200 Main Event getting underway this Thursday 23 October.

With WSOP A-Pac having only just finished in Melbourne – Canada’s Scott Davies claiming the gold bracelet and an AU$850,000 pay day – players are spoiled for choice over the coming fortnight with the WPT holding their Manila and Sanya events back to back and of course the Asia Championship of Poker getting underway at City of Dreams. The ACOP Main Event starts on Tuesday 4 November.
