Once every four years a crazy carnival of sport called the Summer Olympics rolls around. For two and a half weeks the world’s countries put aside their differences and their elite athletes run, jump, throw, paddle, row, sail, dive, swim, shoot, kick, hit, ride, punch, wrestle, lift and cycle their hearts out in the battle for gold.
National pride is on the line, life-changing performances occur daily and records are sure to tumble. Half the world watches the drama unfold on TV. To become an instant expert at all the sports and impress your friends, turn to page 50 and read our “every sport explained” article.
China won the most gold at the 2008 Beijing Games, so it will be interesting to see if China can make it two in a row. Australia is another Asia Pacific country that punches way above her weight at the Olympics. Ranked around 50th in the world by population, Australia consistently comes in around 5th in the medal rankings. South Korea and Japan also figure in the top 10 so the Asia Pacific region is well represented.
