Uber trying guerrilla marketing tactics in Macau?

Written by Ben Blaschke

WGM was surprised to see the promotional material issued last week by Uber claiming it had “partnered with Studio City Macau to give away last-minute tickets to Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour on Sunday, Feb 21.”

Uber users were invited to either enter a promo code and take a ride or refer a friend who takes a ride for the chance to win two tickets to see Madonna and Uber rides both to and from Studio City worth MOP$17,000.

However, it seems unusual to us that Studio City would partner with an organization that the Macau police, at least, maintain is illegal. Either way, getting a definitive answer has proven easier said than done, with Uber simply telling us that, “Studio City Macau and Uber are having this joint promotion to give away last minute Madonna tickets to two riders in Macau, as described in our EDM; and also to two riders in Hong Kong.” Hardly a strong confirmation that an official deal had been struck between Uber and Studio City.

We also contacted Melco Crown for comment but received no reply by the time we went to press. And we gave them almost a week.

Opinions on Uber Macau remain divided and we’ve even had some lively discussions on the issue within the WGM bunker, but whichever side of the fence you sit on it seems Uber is taking no prisoners in pushing their brand across the city.
